Groups & Activities

You spend a lot of your time on campus, focused on your studies and it is important to ensure that you have opportunities to have fun and participate in meaningful activities that support your success and health. Your Wellness Team has developed a roster of programming that offers something for everyone. Look and see what interests you! 

Track your wellness journey by using the Path to Wellness document. Use this guide to track independent wellness activities and be sure to validate your attendance at Wellness events. Your participation will provide you with a ballot to have your name entered in a draw for a chance to win a prize valued up to $200!

Students may experience a number of common challenges or stressors throughout the year. Wellness Services hosts a variety of activities and workshops to promote mental health and wellness literacy and to encourage our students to consider how they can care for their whole selves and develop the resilience and self-care strategies that will carry them beyond their years at Huron. 

 

September - Social

Developing a sense of connection, belonging and a well-developed support system. Making meaningful connections with people by taking an active part in your community and maintaining positive relationships.

Activities may include: 

  • Hygge Hour 
  • Movie and Games Nights 
  • Sidewalk Talks 
  • Relationships and Boundaries Workshop 
October - Intellectual

Recognizing creative abilities and finding ways to expand knowledge and skills. Inspiring a sense of curiosity by opening your mind to new experiences, concepts and skills that are mentally stimulating and creative.

Activities may include: 

  • Wellness Book Club 
  • Ted Talks 
  • Time Management and Motivation Workshop 
November - Emotional

Coping effectively with life, creating satisfying relationships. Being emotionally balanced, understanding yourself and seeking support, if necessary.

Activities may include: 

  • Encouragement and Gratitude Wall 
  • Long Night Against Procrastination 
  • Self Care and Vision Boards 
  • Emotion Regulation Workshop 
December - Spiritual

Expanding a sense of purpose and meaning in life. Fostering a sense of inner peace and harmony while participating in activities that support one’s beliefs and values.

Activities may include: 

  • Yoga and meditation 
  • Quiet space in the Wellness Centre 
  • Self Care Resources 
January - Financial

Satisfaction with current and future financial situations. Understanding your financial situation and your relationship with money, so you can make sound decisions.

Activities may include: 

  • Budgeting Workshop 
  • Zero Waste Popup 
February - Physical

Recognizing the need for physical activity, healthy foods, and sleep. Adopting healthy habits and minimizing risky behaviours that may affect your wellbeing.

Activities may include: 

  • Yoga  
  • Meal Planning on a Budget 
  • Cooking Class 
March - Occupational

Personal satisfaction and enrichment from one’s work. Identifying work/volunteer and hobby opportunities in settings that promote personal satisfaction and enrich your personal and professional life.

Activities may include: 

  • Character Strengths Discussion 
  • Suggest-Fest 
  • Build Your Bucket List 
  • Career and Volunteerism Workshops 
     
April - Environmental

Good health by occupying pleasant and stimulating environments that supports wellbeing. Making efforts to protect and sustain your surrounding environment to promote health and wellbeing.

Activities may include: 

  • Plogging 
  • Gardening 
  • Huron Hikes

Yoga

Join Jen Thompson, MSW, RSW, RYT for drop-in yoga every month. Yoga is open to all Huron students at no cost, please bring your own mat.

For the 2019-20 year, Yoga is scheduled on the following dates from 11:30-12:30:

Dietician Services

 

Western Dietician Services are your on-campus nutrition professionals providing nutrition counselling for students, faculty and staff. 

They offer meal planning, recipe ideas, sports nutrition, management for digestive health concerns and eating disorders, and more! 
Services are free of charge for students through your USC Health Plan and may be reimbursable through extended health benefit plans. 

Book an appointment to see Samantha Gianotti, Registered Dietician, in Huron’s Wellness Centre on the last Wednesday of every month
(September-March).

Can’t make it that day? WDS is located in Western’s UCC building, within the Wellness Education Centre (Room 76B) and open Monday-Friday.

Learn to Thrive
Living Life to the Full

Was your last academic year tough? Didn’t get the grades you had hoped for? Want to do better, but don’t know where to start? Learn to Thrive is a Wellness Services initiative aimed at supporting students to thrive, academically and personally. Build motivation, optimism, and resilience, along with learning strategy essentials like time management and effective studying.  

Learn to Thrive welcomes all students including those on academic probation, students with disabilities, mature students, international students, working students, and students raising or caring for families. We welcome racialized and marginalized students, Indigenous students, equity-seeking students, LGBTQQIP2SAA students. If you are ready to take a new approach to living and learning, we encourage you to register at here.

Want to feel happier, have more energy, gain confidence, enjoy better relationships, feel less stressed and develop skills to deal with life’s challenges?

Living Life to the Full is a fun, interactive and accessible 8-week group-based program that will be offered early in 2020. It will help you do simple things to feel happier, develop skills and tools to reduce stress, boost your mood and stop feeling low.  

The course introduces techniques that help you deal better with negative thinking and make it through life transitions (going to university, grieving, etc.). Your investment is 12 hours, and those hours can change your life.
