Residence Residence Plan September 2020
Huron has made the decision to move all classes to an online format for September. Physical distancing guidelines also means we have had to reduce the number of rooms available for students in our residences. Because of the conditions under which online learning takes place, we have decided to consider applications for residence from those students who may have internet access issues which leave them at a disadvantage for the online learning environment. Specifically, students whose current address or home address is outside of North America, and who may be facing challenges of time zones or internet accessibility, will be given first consideration for residence rooms.
We are still carefully considering different scenarios that will determine the number of rooms available for student living, but we do know occupancy will be significantly reduced as a result of implementing physical distancing. Decisions about the exact number of rooms available will be made in the coming weeks. We are very clear about our commitment to encourage all students to continue their education at Huron University and be supported by us in every way possible. Therefore, any students who currently reside in North America will be given the opportunity to complete a secondary application form to address access or housing issues they are facing and why they should be considered for a residence room. We are going to evaluate secondary applications on a case by case basis, taking into account time zone issues, internet access for students who live in rural areas or a northern location in Canada, or any other housing-related issue that should be considered for residence placement.
IF YOU ARE A STUDENT LIVING OUTSIDE OF NORTH AMERICA, OR AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT WITH A HOME ADDRESS OUTSIDE OF NORTH AMERICA:
Please email firstname.lastname@example.org. You will be sent the link to apply to residence online. Please Note: a $5000 residence deposit is required but will be refunded should you not be able to accept our offer of residence due to travel restrictions or visa issues. The deadline to apply to residence is June 19, 2020.
IF YOU ARE A STUDENT LIVING INSIDE NORTH AMERICA BUT ARE FACING HOUSING ISSUES OR LACK OF INTERNET ACCESSIBILITY:
Our secondary application is now available on this website or and can be sent via email if requested. The deadline for submission is June 30th. We are going to evaluate secondary applications on a case by case basis, taking into account time zone issues, internet access for students who live in rural areas or a northern location in Canada, or any other housing-related issue that should be considered for residence placement.
IF YOU ARE A STUDENT THAT HAS ALREADY APPLIED TO RESIDENCE (INTERNATIONAL OR DOMESTIC):
Refunds will be provided to all students who have applied to residence and live in North America. Students have been emailed details about this process. Please note that it will take up to 4 weeks to process full refunds.
There is no further action required of students who live outside of North America and have already applied for residence and paid the deposit. Students who have applied but not paid the deposit have until June 19, 2020 to complete the application with a deposit payment.
As Huron President Dr. Barry Craig has indicated, we understand this is far from ideal and not what any of us planned for. But we feel strongly our commitment to equitable access for students is the most important principle to consider in guiding these difficult decisions. Please reach out to our Residence Managers at or our AVP, Students Jennifer Flynn-Clark if you have any questions or concerns.
