Non-Departmental Courses

Huron wants all of our students to be able to explore their unique interests in ways that nurture their individual gifts. By creating different avenues, beyond the standard curriculum, for students to extend their learning, we are better preparing to apply their knowledge in active and transformative ways within their local and global communities.

To fulfill our mission of Developing Leaders with Heart, our university offers a number of courses that are administered outside the departmental and program structure and that contribute to students’ general foundational knowledge and skills and/or to several programs at once.

Alumni

We are immensely proud of our alumni. As much as we try to provide the best-possible learning environments for Liberal Arts students, we are continuously blown away by what our graduates go on to accomplish. Our students are creating and contributing to an impressive legacy of achievement, and we hope some of this success can be attributed to our university’s dedication to providing learning platforms that put people’s individual needs first and continuously challenge them to ask difficult questions, think differently and develop compassion for people and circumstances far beyond our classrooms.

Learn about some of the Huron alumni who are leading lives (companies, communities and people) beyond our wildest imaginations.

Professors

Some of the most endearing aspects of the Huron community are its prioritization of collaboration, mutual understanding and respect. Not only do our staff and faculty extend their heads and hearts to our students, but professors also treat one another with the highest regard for who they are as academics – and more importantly, people. Their willingness to share in one another’s lives and work breeds creative solutions and also creates amazing opportunities for our students. As professors come together to blend their courses and community initiatives for the benefit of our Leaders with Heart, students gain access to unprecedented avenues for learning.

Meet the professors who are putting their heads together to make your university experience even better.

  • My main task as a Liberal Arts professor is to help students build the tools they need to go out into the world as principled and thoughtful people. It all comes down to whether or not they have the critical thinking skills to question not only the world around them, but also to question themselves.

    Associate Professor, Political Science

  • My goal as a professor is to accompany students as they transition from directed learning environments cultivated in secondary school to the undirected learning environments they will meet in the future.
    Thomas Peace, PhD
    Associate Professor, History

  • I approach teaching as the cultivation of events in which we may confront the responsibilities we have as knowers, embrace the value of dis- and re-orientations in our learning, and become highly skilled in ethical scholarly practices.
    Mark F. N. Franke, PhD
Professor and Director, Centre for Global Studies

  • My goal when I teach is to transform how my students think. In particular, I want students to recognize the importance of historical context to understanding the contemporary world.
