Huron moves to a smoke, and tobacco-free campus

Jon Munn, Director, Marketing and Communications
Sep 27, 2019

This summer, Huron moved to a smoke, and tobacco-free campus effective July 1, 2019.

The new Smoke and Tobacco Free campus policy will be in line with Huron’s mission in providing our faculty, staff and students with a healthy environment of learning. The policy will apply to students, faculty, staff, contract workers and visitors to Huron’s campus, and is extended to smoking, or use of any tobacco and cannabis products and the use of e-cigarettes.

Dr. Barry Craig, President of Huron at Western, said the move will further enable a healthier and safer community for all community members.

“As a smoke and tobacco-free campus, Huron is a community that promotes health and wellness and ensures faculty, staff, students and visitors are not exposed to second-hand smoke,” Dr. Craig said. In addition, faculty, staff and students that have a desire to quit, are connected with the appropriate resources to assist and promote their success.”

Since Huron is part of a broader campus community, Huron believes this consistency and alignment of the policy within the broader campus community of Western, Brescia and King’s is important for the success of a thriving campus. Huron’s Health and Safety committee supports this policy as it focuses on the well-being of the entire campus community.

“It is not lost on me that this is a significant change, but it one that we feel important, if not necessary to make,” Dr. Craig said.

For those who are looking to quit or reduce their tobacco use, there are a number of on-campus and community resources available outlined in the policy. We encourage every community member to review and become familiar with this new policy and if you have questions about accessing these resources, please contact Justin Henry, Director of Human Resources, at jhenry56@huron.uwo.ca.
