COVID-19 Vaccinations Required for Safe Return to Huron Residences

May 27 2021

Huron University College is busy making preparations to welcome students back to campus this Fall. Over the past year, our students, faculty and staff have missed that sense of community that has come to define our campus. Our focus now is bringing that community back in the safest way possible.

To that end, Huron alongside our partners at Western University and affiliated colleges Brescia and King’s, will be requiring students living in residence to have received at least their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, assuming Ontario’s supply allows.

“The safety of our community is our first concern as we prepare for in-class learning,” said Dr. Barry Craig, President of Huron University College. “This step will help keep our entire community safe from COVID-19 as we prepare to welcome students back for in-class learning.”

Students living in residence will be asked to get vaccinated before their arrival. Those who can’t access a vaccination will have 14 days following their move-in date to get vaccinated. The University of Western Ontario will operate an on-campus vaccination clinic later this summer, as soon as vaccines are available. More details will be communicated directly to students eligible for living in residence in the coming days.

“We strongly encourage everyone in the Huron community to get their vaccine as soon as they are eligible,” said Dr. Craig. “This is the most important thing we can do to keep ourselves and others safe, and restore that close-knit community that Huron students have come to expect.”

Huron will continue to communicate updates on our return to campus as they become available throughout the summer.

Update: Since publication of this article, we have seen the rise in the Delta variant and increased access to vaccine supply across Canada. As a result, Huron has made the decision to require students to provide proof of full vaccination status and a negative COVID-19 test in order to move into residence.
