On May 13, Huron was pleased to host a sod-turning ceremony to celebrate the beginning of a major construction project, in partnership with EllisDon, that will culminate in the university’s brand-new 40,000 square foot academic building, which will be along Western Rd.

“Huron’s mission is to inspire and equip our students to be Leaders with Heart,” says Dr. Barry Craig, Huron’s President. “Thus, we have developed comprehensive co-op programs and a revolutionary volunteer initiative that sees every Huron student giving of his or her time to help others. We’re confident the new academic building will help further our ambitious goals.”

To achieve this vision, Huron partnered with world-leading construction mogul, EllisDon, a company which prioritizes innovation, excellence and community as much as the university does. Huron is excited about the creative opportunities presented by working with this great company.

Chair of EllisDon Inc., Gerald Slemko, shares the sentiment surrounding this large building project is mutual.

“EllisDon is proud to partner with Huron to construct their new academic building, which will have a cutting-edge design that integrates with the current structures, creating a truly integrated community,” Slemko shares. “We at EllisDon are excited to be part of it.”

At the heart of this project is Huron’s students – past, present and future. Their unique needs have been accounted for throughout every step of the planning process and like, their leader, they can’t wait to see what this space will contribute to their campus. Breaking ground on our new academic building brings with it the promise of opportunities to engage in experiences that will fundamentally shift our students’ ways of thinking – and acting,” says Christianne Morrison, Huron’s Student Council President. “I’m eager to see how this space empowers them to learn from, challenge and grow with one another.”

NOT ONLY WILL THE ACADEMIC BUILDING PROVIDE STATE-OF-THE-ART LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS, BUT IT WILL CONTAIN A GATHERING SPACE FOR STUDENTS, WHERE THEY CAN BOTH SOCIALIZE AND COLLABORATE ON PROJECTS.

“We want this space to become a doorway linking Huron to the wider community,” Dr. Craig said. “The 450-seat auditorium in particular will enable and environment for public policy forums, electoral debates and other community engagement events. Its breathtaking design and prominent location along Western Road will make a statement to everyone who sees it.”

This project is a significant achievement for Huron, but it also represents a win for London’s economy by contributing to the city’s vibrant educational landscape.

“This investment by Huron will strengthen London’s leadership role as a centre for post-secondary education and an attractive centre for international students,” Gerald Slemko said. “Ultimately, this new building will further expand the educational opportunities in London.”
