Services we offer

Huron Library offers many additional support and services to our faculty members.


In light of Huron’s fully online approach to course delivery for the 2020/21 academic year, and aligning with the broader strategy being adopted across the wider Affiliate and Western library communities, Library & Learning Services (LLS) at Huron will adopt a ‘digital-first’ approach to the provision of access to course & library materials for the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 terms.

This fall/winter, no physical course reserves (i.e., short-term loan, required or recommended readings) will be housed on-site in the Library at Huron. Instead, LLS staff will facilitate digital access to required readings via a new, pilot-based Course Readings Service. This approach will ensure that all required course readings are available in digital format and may be uploaded to course sites within OWL where students may access them directly, consistently, and on an ongoing basis. Working within the bounds of current copyright legislation and fair dealing guidelines, we will selectively digitize print content (e.g., book chapters, journal articles) wherever possible. We will also acquire access to eBooks, eJournals, and streaming media where this content is available for libraries to license.

Faculty Research Support

The Research Help Desk in the Huron Commons, on the main floor of the Huron Library. Reference staff can assist you in finding the information you need from quick facts to literature searches. You may also book a research consultation online.

For instruction services contact our interim Teaching and Learning Librarian, Rachel Melis by email or at extension 235.  Rachel will be pleased to provide instruction for individual faculty members on a variety of information literacy topics including but not limited to: evaluating sources, developing search terms, defining a research question, research methods, and research metrics.

For writing support services contact Mandy Penney, Coordinator of Writing Services, by email. Writing Services offers a limited number of appointments for faculty members designed to brainstorm, draft, or polish work.

Teaching Support

Huron Library’s pedagogical approach: Instruction is informed by research and involves a collaborative approach in which our Teaching and learning Librarian partners with you to determine how, where, and when to integrate formal information literacy and research skills instruction into your courses.

Classes are designed to include:

  • Alignment with Western’s Degree Outcomes (WDOs), Western’s Information Literacy Learning Outcomes (ILLOs), and your specific Course Outcomes.
  • A scaffolded plan to teach the research skills necessary for success in a forthcoming course assignment
  • Pre & post-test assessment of student learning
  • Active learning and blended learning techniques

Information Literacy Topics:

  • Research as Inquiry: developing a research question & concept mapping one’s thinking about a topic
  • Authority is Constructed and Contextual: assessing authority and bias within a published scholarly work and within one’s own approach to research
  • Searching as Strategic Exploration: planning a search, keyword development, navigating information organization systems, divergent and convergent research thinking
  • Scholarship as Conversation: information evaluation, citation methods/tools, joining the scholarly conversation, moving from a consumer of scholarship to a contributor
  • Information Power Structures: hegemony in library cataloging and implications for research

Digital Initiatives

Library and Learning Services offers Huron faculty a variety of digital supports for their teaching and research. These include: support for course-based digital projects, including featuring student works on the platform; technology software and hardware workshops, to introduce or integrate digital tools into teaching and learning at Huron; support for open journal creation, via Open Journal Systems (OJS); as well as the development of faculty research profiles through our in-house and open institutional repository, Scholarship@Huron.

Whether you are looking to add a digital component to your assignments or your in-class instruction, LLS can help! Mission Statement: is a platform to disseminate, promote and archive undergraduate research and community partnership projects of Huron. It acts as a central discovery layer for departmental projects, allowing users to easily find and view the different undergraduate research initiatives taking place at Huron.
