The United Nations recently called on youth around the world to lead the implementation of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The COVID-19 global pandemic adds greater urgency to the global call for change agents who can successfully tackle the 21st century’s grand challenges of sustainability, justice, and inclusion.

Huron’s educational mission asks students to lead with their minds and their hearts. This competition invites students to identify a problem or crisis that their community presently faces, either locally globally, and to imagine a potential solution and how it might be brought to fruition.

At Huron we always seek out the next generation of innovative thinkers who are passionate about improving the state of the world and possess the potential to bring about positive change in the communities in which they live.

This experience will allow you to learn from our expert professors, meet fellow Leaders with Heart from around the world and develop invaluable professional skills for your future in free, optional workshops while diving deep into ideas you are most passionate about.

Huron plays its part in both the search for new ideas and the mentoring of compassionate leaders who make the world a better place for all. This is your chance to showcase your potential and earn big prizes to turn your ideas into reality. Will you answer the call to lead?

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Tutorial Sessions and am I required to attend it live?

The Tutorial Sessions are where you will learn everything you need to know about the competition: our Professors will showcase what they are looking for in your pitches, provide their tips, advice as well as a template you will need to follow for your submission to the competition. Our team will also be available to talk about the prizes and answer any other questions you may have.

Register for any one of the Tutorial Zoom sessions with the links above.

After the Tutorial Session, to whom can I ask any questions about the competitions?

After the Tutorial Session, Professors will not be available for questions and advice about your submission or pitch. This is why it’s important to register for and attend the Tutorial Session live.

However, if you have any questions about the format of the competition or the prizes, please don’t hesitate to contact Alicia McLeod

Can I attend the Tutorial Sessions before deciding whether or not I wish to participate in the competition?

Of course! The Tutorial Sessions are designed to give you a helpful overview of what the competition will be all about.

After attending a Tutorial Sessions, if you wish to participate in the competition you must send us your submission before the deadline. If you do not wish to participate after attending the Tutorial Session, no action is needed.

I have not applied to Huron. May I still register in the competitions?

Of course! We welcome students who are eager to bring their ideas to the competitions, regardless of whether you have applied to Huron or not.

Will the scholarships only be given to students who decide to enrol at Huron?

Yes. If you win the competition, your scholarship prize and $1,500 Research Fellowship can only be used if you are accepted to a Huron program. The scholarships listed will be issued to you in addition to any other scholarship(s) you are eligible for when you are admitted to Huron.

WILL CERTIFICATES ONLY BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS WHO WIN THE COMPETITIONS?

No. All students who participate in the program will receive a certificate from Huron that you can add to your resume, helping to set you apart from other candidates. Students who attend each optional workshop will have that designation added onto their certificate.

Can you tell me more about the Research Fellowship

Students submitting one of the top 3 solutions will also be eligible for a $1,500 Huron Research Fellowship with one-on-one Professor mentorship to study their chosen problem in-depth and develop practical solutions to address it in the real world.

If you are successfully admitted to Huron, your professor mentor will work with you to support you through your research fellowship as you pursue your passion

CAN I REGISTER FOR THE COMPETITION AS A GROUP WITH MY CLASSMATES OR FRIENDS?

In order to keep the competition fair among all participants and ensure the groups have different backgrounds, you may only participate in the competition as an individual. However please share the event opportunity with your friends and encourage them to register for the event as well!

Will the final pitch be presented live or recorded?

The final pitches in January will be presented live to our panel of judges.

Will my competition results affect my application to Huron?

The application process to Huron is entirely independent of this competition. If you are applying to Huron, you will need to meet regular academic admission requirements for the program you are applying to, in order to be admitted.

However, you may use your participation in this competition as an extra-curricular achievement when applying to any supplemental applications beyond the initial application! For example, your achievements in this competition could help strengthen your scholarship applications. Will I be able to manage participating in this competition with all my schoolwork going on?

We know you’re busy with schoolwork of senior year and other activities in your life. The length and rigour of the competitions were designed with this in mind, so you will be able to manage both. It’s also why you will be provided with over a month between the Tutorial Session and when you need to make your competition submission.

Above all, we want this to be a fun and exciting experience for you to apply your creative freedom to ideas you care about and learn some helpful skills along the way!
