The Gary Barnes Pre-Business Scholarship Competition

The Gary Barnes Pre-Business Scholarship is presented annually to a full-time student registered at Huron University who is passionate about business and is pursuing a pre-Ivey program, and who is going on to continue their education at the Ivey Business School in their third year. A qualifying student will have achieved 80% or more in their previous year of study and has also demonstrated financial need based on criteria established by Huron University, and who is not receiving a Hellmuth Scholarship. This Scholarship recognizes the commitment such achievement requires in successfully balancing the demands of academic and financial obligations. Preference will be given to mature students and to students who resumed their academic careers after a significant interruption.

There are three scholarships available each year: one is for an incoming pre-business student, one is for a 2nd-year pre-business student and one is for a Huron-Ivey dual degree program student.

To apply: Incoming first-year students: Please use the following application form and follow the instructions on how it should be submitted.

If you receive an in-course scholarship, you will be notified by the Student Awards Committee in the summer.

About Gary Barnes:
The Scholarship was established in 2019 by Gary Barnes, Class of 1967. Mr. Barnes attended Huron in 1963-1965 and subsequently completed his business degree at Ivey Business School. This Scholarship is a reflection of the financial support and opportunities Mr. Barnes himself benefited from as a Huron student.
Huron University played a major role in Mr. Barnes attending university. One of Mr. Barnes’ goals in high school was to be not only the first member of his family to attend university but to also be the first university graduate. What his high school guidance counsellor neglected to tell him was that he needed a credit in French to be admitted to a business school. Not giving up, Mr. Barnes worked for three years while also working by correspondence to achieve his accounting degree. The dream of attending university, however, hadn’t died. A friend suggested he speak with Ms. Catharine Ridley, Registrar at Huron for guidance, and she indicated that he could be admitted to Huron as a mature student in the pre-business program if he obtained a foreign language credit in summer school. In short order, Mr. Barnes quit his job, achieved his foreign language credit and then attended Huron as a mature student. Mr. Barnes received the highest marks for any student in the pre-business program going into the Ivey Business School and also received one of the few scholarships given at that time.
After graduating from the Ivey Business School in 1967, Mr. Gary Barnes joined Proctor and Gamble in Toronto. Over the next 30 years, he was President and CEO of 3 major companies including RJR Foods, Ault Dairies and Coca-Cola Foods (Minute Maid Division). Mr. Barnes retired in 1997 as Executive Vice President and General Manager of Coca-Cola Bottling Canada.
As Mr. Barnes says, “Huron University not only gave me the opportunity to go to university and get into business school but also helped shape my approach to life. I spent my entire four years in residence at Huron and was a Don for my last three years which helped me to continue to afford my education. While at Huron, I made some of my best friends, and the approach of the entire Huron staff played a role in me deciding that I would give back in later years as I was able. I’ve set-up three pre-business scholarships at Huron and Huron’s current mandate of challenging their students to be leaders with heart definitely applies.”
