Stop Breaking Down: Entertainment versus Truth in Historical Film and Television

Historians have debated the ability of film-makers to contribute to our understanding of the past since the origin of the motion picture through to the digital age.   But when it comes to telling historical stories, it’s television and film that grab mass attention, far more than the books and essays of professional historians. Audiences flock to the spectacle of the screen where a sober presentation of the past is often traded for compelling characters, shocking plot twists and breathtaking cliff-hangers. Glossy war films, rolicking bio pics and rich period pieces keep us binge watching history.  But the cost of riveting entertainment is often the truth. Perhaps no other genre misleads us more than the gangster film. Breaking down truth and fiction in the hit BBC television series Peaky Blinders and Martin Scorcese’s feature film Gangs of New York, television writer and Huron history professor Chris Blow will talk about the ways film and television habitually misrepresent the reality of organized crime and the lives of the urban poor in history.
