COVID-19: The Ever-Evolving Workplace

Huron University College recognizes the unprecedented situation with COVID-19 affecting many students, organizations and recruitment practices. We commend the creativity of employers creating alternative work arrangements and those developing remote work strategies and value the patience and professionalism of our students during this transitional time. At Huron we continue to prioritize personalized supports for our community of students and employers in any capacity possible.

  • Appointments for students and employers are available with the Career Development team to discuss employment opportunities by email, phone or virtual meeting.
  • Many organizations are continuing to post employment opportunities. We continue to update our online Job Board on Huron’s Career Development OWL portal.
  • A Weekly Resources page has been added to the Huron Career Development OWL portal to help students navigate the job search and interview process during Covid-19.

Frequently Asked Questions - by Students and Employers

  • Can I still post and hire for a summer internship that starts in May/June?

    Yes, provided the opportunity is based in Canada and travel to the USA or international countries is not required. All work must be completed in Canada.

  • How will employers conduct interviews?

    Many organizations are using virtual options via telephone or webcam. The Huron Career Development team can assist with creating interview schedules and communicating details to students.

  • I have a student employed with us currently. Can they continue to work for us?

    Students can continue to work during this time and would follow the consistent health and safety recommendations of the employer and government during Covid-19. When applicable, employers are making arrangements for students to continue their employment remotely.

  • How will our current situation impact the start and/or end date of internships?

    We understand employers may be looking at options to work remotely, condense employment or offer part-time hours. Students and employers can be flexible to accommodate the circumstances.

  • Our student intern will likely be working remotely, is there any support you can offer?

    The Career Development team can provide resources for both employers and students to transition to work from home.

  • We posted a summer internship opportunity, but we have had to cancel the program. What now?

    Where applicable, Huron’s Career Development Team can assist in communicating information and connect with individual students to find alternate employment.

  • Can you recommend methods to engage with students that are not in-person?

    There are many online options available. Many employers have success with virtual interviews, orientation, career fairs, virtual coffee chats and social networking.

  • As a student I am still looking for summer employment. What can I do during this time?

    We encourage Huron students to connect directly with their Career Development Coordinator via email to arrange a time to review their options and receive support.
