Volunteering is essential for developing a compassionate heart and a realistic worldview
For Ailin, volunteering is as natural as breathing. Throughout her life, she’s donated her time and talents to many organizations, such as the Sunday Suppers Soup Kitchen and Project ARC, a touring human rights play.
In 2016, she traveled to West Africa to pilot an environmental education program in local schools with the Nova Scotia Gambia Association. She’s continued volunteering with Starfish International − a non-profit dedicated to improving education for girls in The Gambia − on a pilot dance program for children with special needs.
“One little boy with Down syndrome was having a difficult time learning the alphabet but loved tossing a soccer ball. We incorporated the tune of the ABC song into the rhythm of the ball play, and he learned how to sing the alphabet. His father was in tears when he saw what his son had achieved.”
Ailin believes volunteering is an essential part of her education because in serving others, she also learns what is truly important to her.
